Simply observing and listening to people underpins our ability to transform the way people work, and the work they do, for the better.

A workplace that supports collaboration

Moving more than 250 people to a new office in Manchester gave Irwin Mitchell the chance to make its mark as the region’s leading provider of personal and business legal services. It was the perfect opportunity to build a workplace that works for everyone in the business, and bring staff and visitors together by breaking down silos.

Cross-working between legal teams drives the company’s growth, so it was our priority to design, build and deliver a solution that supports continuous collaboration. For the transformation to succeed, we had to understand more about how people worked, and how their office could support them.

Always learning, always evolving

We took the time to gain a deep understanding of the company, how people work, and the challenges they face. We conducted a time utilisation study, interviews, Leesman surveys and observed employees in action. Our research helped us better understand their processes, infrastructure and how staff engage with their clients and co-workers.

We used this data to help form an effective strategy to move forward with and were able to build tailored functionality into the design, including a future-proof IT and technical infrastructure to support the company’s growth ambitions.

A workplace fit for success

Irwin Mitchell’s new office in Manchester welcomes clients and brings their legal teams closer together.

While agile working means different things to different companies, for Irwin Mitchell it was about designing a flexible environment that offers people a choice of places to work, meet and collaborate, underpinned by focused desk-based working. With formal and informal meeting rooms, work areas and a spacious breakout area overlooking Manchester Central Library, staff have more choice in how and where they work. Enabled to collaborate, teams have grown even stronger – and been able to practise better law.

The new workplace encompasses their ethos of ‘Expert Hand, Human Touch’ – professional, practical, welcoming and inclusive.

The innovative design reflects the importance we place in our people, which will benefit our clients and ensure we deliver the highest quality legal services.
